لقد ارتبط اسم اليمن في أغلب المحافل بوصف اليمن السعيد، مما دفع البعض إلى البحث عن التسمية، وبالعودة إلى البحث في التاريخ عن معني اليمن أولا قبل الوصف يشير التاريخ في صفحاته إلى أن اليمن مقصود به ً قطعا أرض الجنوب، جنوب أسيا ً تحديدا أو جنوب شبه الجزيرة العربية، والمرادف لذلك المصطلح هو عبارة عن بلاد أخرى، وهو أرض الشمال أو أرض الشام أو شيء واحد، وهو الوقوع على يمين الكعبة.
يعود سر التسمية إلى القائد الأسكندر المقدوني الذي أطلق هذا الاسم على اليمن لأنه فشل وعجز ويئس من غزوها، وكان الرومان يسمونها (العربية السعيدة) - وكذا أسماها (فون هافن) المؤرِّخ العالمي في رسائله بالفرنسية, ويقول «كوركيل هانسن»: «كل شيء حتى ذلك الوقت كان يدل على أن أرض اليمن تهاون الكثيرون في اكتشافها لأول مرة في تاريخها هي حقاً (أرض السعادة على وجه الأرض)».
لقد تجاوزت صنعاء عاصمة اليمن السعيد كل توقعاتهم.. فصنعاء حقاً بجانب عدن - وأب - ويافع وبقية المدن اليمنية تتمتع بأجواء مريحة وصحية جعلتها بالفعل جنة الدنيا على الأرض وأكثر من ذلك. ويقال إن اليمن سميت بالسعيد لأنها كانت وما زالت البلد الغني الوحيد، وهي بجانب هذه السعادة هي أرض الأحلام والآمال والطموحات والشعر والأدب والرومانسية والحضارة والتراث والتاريخ المجيد وخيراته المهابة من الله .
